S-Technology
The impulse to develop the 'WALZEN IRLE S-Technology' resulted out of endeavours to minimize the so called barring and the polygon effect from high demand thermal rolls in multi-nip calenders.
The roll type DuoTherm S® is based on the flow through principle "duo pass" but also has a helix in the peripheral bores.
The helix supplies the heating medium with a twisted flow which balances out the temperature loss over the complete roll width. The twisted flow has a positive effect on the heat transfer between the heating medium and the inner wall of the peripheral bore.
The application of a helix with permanent decreasing gradient in the flow through direction means for the first time that it is possible to balance out the temperature loss purposefully, without fundamentally interfering with the pressure loss in the roll system.
This means that this technology has a positive effect on the geometrical shape of the roll. Rolls which have the conventional peripheral bores reach values for the radius deviation in the shape from less than 1 µm and in the temperature from less that 2°C , these values can be halved when using the S-Technology which reduces the danger of barring.
The roll type DuoTherm S® can also be used with a reduced volume flow, without having to make significant comprises in the profile quality. Even better results can be achieved by using the roll type MonoTherm S®, a roll, which in the monopass system has a flow through and which is equipped with S-Technology for the axial temperature compensation. The roll types MonoTherm S® and DuoTherm S® developed by WALZEN IRLE offer enough potential to comply with the demands of a modern high performance calenders.The Walzen Irle descriptions for the thermal rolls with S-Technology are:
